There were wild! scenes ' hero this afternoon oh the Maidan,' the open space in the centre of .Calcutta, where an attempt was made to' hold the annual meeting of the Indian National Congress which the Government had banned.
Hundreds of Nationalist sympathisers gathered there, but every attempt on the part of any speaker to move a resolution was stopped. The police finally dispersed the meeting.
Hundreds' were arrested. The police used their batons freely, and many broken heads resulted.
