INAUGURATION BY THE POPE
AN IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY

Th e Pope to-day inaugurated the Holy Year (which he has decreed in order to commemorate the nineteenth centenary of th e death of Christ). The inauguration was conducted with impressive ceremony. ;
Wearing his white silk mantle, with the golden • mitre, th e . Pope was carried in the gestatoria] chair, attended by cardinals, prelates, ambassadors and ministers, to the Holy Door at the Basilica of St- Peters. On this door the Pope knocked three times with the gold hammer, which was presented by Catholics from all over th e world. The door being opened, the Pope crossed the threshold, the cardinals and bishops following.
