HOKITIKA RIVER

BOROUGH COUNCIL’S CONCERN.

EFFECT ON DRAINAGE SYSTEM

“There is a matter which is causing a great deal of concern to the Hokitika Harbour Board, the County Counoi, atnd the town generally,”' said Cr. E. W. Heenan at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening. “I refer to the Hoiktika river, and I think the Borough Council will be affected most if the river continues to fill as- quickly as at present, as it will have an ill effect on the drainage system. This matter is causing concern to the County Council who-views the position as it affects the railway bridge.” Cr. Heenan added that he would like to see some attempt to turn the river. He moved that the borough overseer submit a report, to the next meeting of the Council on the effect that the shelving in the river is having on the drain outlets. If the river were piled across from Butland’s island the position might he relieved. Cr. J. King (who was in the chair), observed that they should go further up to push the river off.

Cr Heenan said that he would like to see this matter go further than tTie Borough Council. It should he dealt with‘fully by a meeting of representatives of the local bodies __ concerned. He referred to the steps the County Council were taking to secure expert advice, and to place before the department the serious position that lmd arisen.

It was decided that the foreman report on the matter to the next meeting of the ’ Council, and that the Council act upon that report in calling a meeting of public bodies.
