A former enemy gun which was accepted by the Birkenhead Borough Council a. number of years ago as a war . trophy lias been honourably disposed of by burial at sea. In making this announcement! to the council the deputy-mayor, Mr G. G. Hewson, said' that the gun, which had been kept in the council’s yard, was considered useless. Mr E. J.' Next Sunday is t 0 b e observed by th e Anglic:n and' Presbyterian Churche s throughout. New Zealand as a day of special intercession for. thg needs of our country at this time. The leaders of both churches have issued letters calling on their people to make this day tone of self-examination and of serious thought regarding citizenship.. There can he little doubt that one of the weaknesses of New Zealand life is the apathy of the average citizen, regarding affairs of the state. For the most mart we are ready to criticise in a cancleas fashion ‘but n ot ready to put our energies into seriovg. thinking, or praying, dr. our country’s behalf. It is hoped that the members of theso churehos in Hokitika will rally to the l r respective services next Sunday.
