HALF HOLIDAY BREACHES
MORNINGS VICE AFTERNOONS
WELLINGTON, March 28,
Because they gave certain employees morning half-nolidays instead of afternoon half-iiolkuiys,. three Wellington hotelkeepers were prosecuted by the Labour Department in the Arbitration Court. The defendants were Thomas Brennan, licensee.of the Te Aro Hotel; Lou Smith, licensee of -the Terminus Hotel j and Thomas Coltman, licensee of the Grand Hotel.
Giving judgment, Judge Frazer said that in the case of Brennan, only, one breach had been committed, and that had been jit the barmen’s • particular request. The Court. proposed to treat the breach as trivial, and to imjiose no penalty. In the case of the two other defendants, the award had been broken oyer a period, and although the. preach was committed at the request of the employees, His Honour eaid that that did not effect, the ease, for the award had universal application, and had to be observed ■ by employer and employee alike. The breaches • could not be treated as trivial, although they, to' gome extent, were excusable. A penalty of £2 in each cage' was imposed. _
