RAILWAY FATALITY
MAN STRUCK BY ENGINE.

WAIPUKURAU, March 27
A fatal railway accident occurred on Saturday nights when a jigger on which was Edward John Groves of Taka pan, surfaceman, 31, was struck by an engine running solo near Marakeke, eight miles south of Waipukurau. The first intimation the driver of the engine had, travelling tender first fully lit with lamp on the front of the tender, was a peculiar grinding on the rails. He saw an object at the side, and then stopped promptly. With the fireman he searched about the engine and line, and' found the outrigger wheel of the jigger, and subsequently back along the line, an unconscious mail. He was conveyed to Waipukurau Hospital suffering from fracture at the base cf the skull, Flo succumbed early yesterday" morning. Groves was h single man, with relatives iii Wellington.
