'SOLVING THE SURPLUS PROBLEM
NEW YORK, March 24
The “New York Times’ ” Washington correspondent states: President ißoosevelt indicated to-day that he considers that the world wheat surplus problem must be solved coincidentally with th e United. States domestic programme. After conferences with the Agricultural Department officials, the State Department has announced that it will ask the wheat surplus producing countries, such as Australia, Canada and Argentina, if discussions of the international wheat surplus at the World Economic Conference will bo agreeable to them. The 'State Department will also try to sound out the Governments, ,as to how far they would be able to go towards controlling wheat production. It is understood that the wheat countries, / and particularly Canada, are concerned over t'he world market situation, as, in the event of the enactment of the Roosevelt Administrations Farm Relief Bill, they fear that the subsidy thereby provided woulu allow the American farmers to undersell t.he world. The League of Nations has already requested information from the United States as to what plans it will present to the conference.
