FINES AGAINST CHINAMEN
/Per Press Association — Copyright.)
WELLINGTON, March 24..
Ten Chinese appeared before Mr Page 5 S.M., to-day, and two pleaded guilty to charges of permitting premises to 'be used for opium smoking, and others to being found unlawfully on the premises. The two former’ Were each fined £SO, or in default three months. Their names were Willis Wong and Zrnig Linn. Three of others were each fined £l2 10s, Th e rest were mended on bail. The smallness of the fines is •plained by the representations made by the Chinese consul that Chinese recently hav, e been serving terms ot prison whe n heavily fined. If their fines were reasonably email, ther e was the possibility of their finding the money, which would be more m tne interests .of the country than those men being kept in gaol at the expense of the 'Government.
