- “One bears a lot about the depression in the course of travel, but everyiwhee r went-. I sa\\< queues lining up tat- the pictues, at the restaurants, and !at football -and cricket, matches,” said Itlie Rev. Father M. J. Furlong, of Drvanporfc, who- returned to Auckland iby the Aioiimvai yesterday after an absence of- 11 months, during which he- visited England, Ireland, France ;and Australia.
“While 'the depression exists on papeir, people generally seem to be exhibiting signs of returning eonfideneb,” said Father Furlong. “Nowhere- did I' encounter a more pessimist ie feeling than that prevailing in New Zealand when ] left nearly a year iigo. I attended the Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, and subsequently spent a good deal of time in Ireland. The people there seem relatively happy, and I was struck with the fact that they seemed to be addicted to tho cinema almost as much as are the people of Auckland • “Returning liv way of the Shots, I. was able to observe conditions in the main centres of most of the Australian States, and from Perth tot Sydney there was evident a feeling of reviving confidence.
! A similar upward trend was observed by another Aucklander, Dr E. Euckley-Turkiiigtoii, who also returned by the Alonowaj. She said there was certainly much distress in the United ■States "hen she was there last year, but there had been a- distinct brightening in the outlook in Britain. Australia was unmistakably “on the niphet.” Melbourne was very solid, 'while; Sydney, having rid itself of the Socialist administration, had developed ft" Mulch saner outlook. Business' was brighter and there seined to lie more work' offering, although there was a long way to go before a complete recovery could be attained.
