SCENE AVOIDED IN HOUSE
A TENSE MOMENT. WELLINGTON, March 4. A scene was avoided in the Horfie this .-afternoon,, when Mr W. A. Veitch (Independent, " Wanganui) withdrew words,'To which objection was raised. iMr Veitch ,; was discussing the principles of ; interest reduction, and in replying to the' argument that a compulispry reduction; amounted to repudiation, he said that it Was a question whether they should won/hip words', as expressed in contracts, or pay specific attention to facts and realities. Mr W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier) : That is what Germany said. Mr Veitch: Even Germany is right sometimes. Yes, that i t -* what Germany said, and your friends were tne friends of Germany when that country was the enemy of th. e nation. .'Mr J. McCombs (Labour, Lyttelton), who was a member of the House during the war period, wa s cn his feet instantly. ‘I hops you noted those words jMr Speaker,” he said. “They oast a 1-eflectjon on certain rm-msers of this House.”: Mr 'Speaker (Sir Charles Statham) ordered the withdrawal of the wOrds. “Yes, I had' decided to do so before you told me to,” replied Mr Veitch. Just before concluding his speech, Mr Vieitch said that although lie had withdrawn the words, he wished to tender, an apology. In replying to an interjection, one was inclined to’throw something back and he acknowledged the fact that he should not hive uced the words ih e did. The . next speaker, Mr Barnard, accepted the apology.
