NAZIS AND REDS
BATTLE IN HAMBURG ARMOURED CARS AND GUNS. (United Press Association —By Electric ■c Telegraph—Copyright) BERLIN, March 7. There was a big street battle in Hamburg between Communists "iiu Nazi Storm troops and police. It commenced when Communists fired from the roofs of houses upon a Nazi demonstration in a square below. The po-
lice thereupon used armoured cars and machine guns in an attack on the Communists’ stronghold' in the Altonu area. The Communists were using hand grenades. It is reported four Hitlerites were killed. The Nazis caught one Communist sniper, and lynched him on the spot. Fighting is going on in narrow alleyways in Altona, but the Communists death, roll is still unknown.
The fighting subsided at midnight. Three were killed and fourteen wounded.
The Nazis, immediately capitalising Hitler’s triumph, following the seizure of power at Hamburg, Altona, and at Bremen, demanded the resignation of the Senate, which was eventually acceded. Meanwhile, they hoisted the Nazi flag over the Town Hall at Lubeck. The Nani colours are flying on official buildings. There were similar scene,q at many towns, including Duisberg, Mannheim. HITLER DOMINATES GERMANY.
HAS WIDESPREAD AUTHORITY.
LONDON, March 6.
The “News Chronicle’s” Berlin correspondent says: “From Koenigsburg to Frankfurt, and from the North Sea to Switzerland, Adolf Hitler dominates Germany with a completeness which Bismarck never knew.
The Nazi flag sometimes accompanied the Imperial tricolour, but more often alone, flies on thousands of public buildings. Local Nazis have notified the Governments of Bavaria, Baden, and Wurtlemburg that if they cling to power, Storm Troops may seize the machinery of the Government. A Nazi police dictator controls Lubeck. Nevertheless it is uncertain whether Herr Hitler will be a German Cromwell. His majority may have saved the face of parliamentary government, but the. triumvirate Hitler, von Papen and Hugenberg have plainly determined that they will not tolerate obstruction, especially the economic policy, in which dictatorial methods are particularly favoured. FASCISTS PLEASED AT ELECTION. ROME, March 6, Though there is some disappointment that Hitler’s majority was not larger, Fascist circles are pleased at the outcome of the election, considering it strikes a blow at Parliamentarianism, enabling Hitler to govern on Fascist lines.
It is recalled that Mussolini himself began with a strong Parliamentary opposition.
SPECULATION REGARDING HITLER.
BERLIN, March 7. " President Hindenburg received Chancellor Hitler. The Cabinet meets today. The Reichstag and Prussian Parliament both meet before the end of the month. It is suggested, the Reichstag will probably pass a special Powers Bill and then adjourn indefinitely. The whole of Germany is now speculating how long Herr Hitler and Dr. Hugenburg will agree. Many 'think that, although the two main Government parties are sincere enough in asserting their partnership is secure, circumstances may prove too strong. POLAND TAKES PRECAUTIONS. WARSAW, March 6. it is officially announced that reports that subversive elements at Danzig are preparing to attack the Polish munition, stores on Westerplatte Peninsula, coupled with the Reichstag fire, have caused the Government to reinforce the troops guarding the stores. ROYALTY AVOIDS GERMANY. NICE, March 6. The King and Queen of Denmark, after a holiday in the Riviera, proceeded homeward, via Paris, instead of Germany, in consequence of the German Government’s urgent warning, last ii.ieht, that it was unable to guarantee their safety owing to the political conditions.
