In a speech at the opening of Weir House, in Wellington yesterday, the Governor-General said the Rhodes Scholar selection committee declined last year to make any recommendations to the Rhodes Trust, partly because they were not satisfied that the candidates presented complied with all the conditions, laid down by Cecil Rhodes in constituting the trust, and partly because they felt it would prove to be a disservice to the Dpniinion to send , forward New Zealanders who, by comparison with Rhodes scholars from other parts of the world, were lacking in outstanding academic achievement. At the committee’s earnest representation, the Rhodes Trustees in London recently intimated their willingness to accept from New Zealand during the coming year twice the normal number of nominees in the assurance that they would possess the requisite high standard of character and achievement.
