The special gold prospecting scheme t-o be brought into force hy the Unemployment Board in this district, through the agency of the Westland County Council, is an opportunity which should be made the most of. The district like the rest of the Coast, has been notable for its gold production, and is known to be highly mineralised generally. Now that- gold is ,tbe licet ai-lea-ble commodity, with other products of the districts at a 'low 9 rice level, it is not surprising that thoughts should turn towards gold milaing. The Unemployed Board, also, lias exhausted 'to a very great extent, the field for useful work near many of the large centres where the numbir of unemployed is legion. It is necessary to find the opportunity for work for - these men a,s quickly as possible. In the search for gold the possibility of discovering, remunerative fields is very great. A large number of former unemployed are now mining in Otago, at the- Thames, and in the Nelson district. That sphere of occupation may well extend to this district where gold wag the lure originally to cnen up the- district. The scheme so far as the Board is concerned, is to be thorough-going. It is clear from Mr Je-sep’s remarks that the Board is in earnest, -and it is for each locality to take.advantage of the opportunity, and make the most of the occasion, by as comprehensive a search for gold deposits as possible. Applications- are being invited from willing prospectors on the unemployed list in tlie first instance, and information, as to likeable fields is desired aJlso. The work is to be under close supervision, and applications for supervisors' is also invited. The intention is to g,et the scheme under way as soon as possible. There was an earnest- ring about the meeting at the County Chambers last night. Mr Jessep’s enthusiasm in the matter appeared to- communicate itself to tlio'-e present, and all tlie speakers were keen to give the scheme a good try cut. That is now the task of the local .body ai the executive authority and all who pan should assist.
