UNEMPLOYMENT

MR JESSEP’S VISIT. The Deputy, Ghairinjin- of the Unemployment Board, Air Jessep, discussed witlidhe members of the Buller County Council on Monday the possibilities 0 f a,- prospecting scheme on a large scale as a cure for the economic ills from which the Buller district is suffering. Ho .stated that the Board’s intention I was to appoint competent supervisors j and mining engineers to organise and I generally handle the prospecting operations. It would not be any extra cost to. the Council, but would relieve its present costs; He realised that tin* Council had been carrying on good work for the Board and hoped that, the Council would co-operate with the prospecting scheme. In Otago, good work was being done under this scheme and men were doing well and now had claims of their own, and were going off the Board’s subsidy payments at the rate of 20 per week. There was no reason why tiie scheme should not operate successfully in this district, and a lot would depend in the Council’s cooperation with the Board. The Board would pay the supervisors and maKe small grants to the men in the way of tools, tents, etc., use of plant sucli as pumps, etc. Grants would be made available for opening up tracks into the back country. He was aware that the district was a big ope, btif with good organisation and supervision, the scheme would be prosecuted with a fair promise of success and general prosperity to the district. After discussion, the Council members decided unanimously to co-operate with the Unemployment Board in furtherance of the scheme, the Council to act as a committee in conjunction with Air J. MePadclen (Director of the School of Mines) and Mr Smith (Chief Postmaster).
