Aft the Band Own Choice Selection for both the A and B Grade, resulted: Port Nicholson, 144pts., 1; Wool-stjo-ii, MOpts., 2; Greymouth Civic, I39pts., 3; 'St. Kilda Municipal, 138$ pts. 4. The band contest A. and B. Grade quickstep and military displays were judged at Cnrl'sbrook this afternoon before a crowd of approximately 20,090. There were 13 bands in the B. Grade and 7in the A. Grade. The former was won by Napier and the fatter by Invercargill. Results: A. At the close of the contest the musical judge, Mr Frank Wright, said the greatest fault that he had found with New Zealand hands was that of untunefulness, and be suggested that the conductors could remedy this fault by assiduous practice of hymn tunes. Another point was that all of the bauds were too loud. There was a ore.-vt difference between full tone and mere noise, and the New Zealand bands would be Improved greatly if the conductors insisted on softer playing.
