HOSPITAL FETE

VERY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

IN AID OF -MEMORIAL FUND

After mos: depressing conditions yesterday morning, the weather improved woruderiiully enabling the garuen lete at the Westland Hospital to Le carried out with a swing. In tile afternoon all roads led to be Hospital grounds which presented an animayeu. appearance, tne attendance oi the piublic there being, the largest that has occasioned lor a cuiisitleralue time.

The show was officially opened by the chairman of the Board (Mr AY. Jeffries) who outlined the objects of the Memorial Fund. The-Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) also spoke. Organised by the nursing staff on behalf of the Nurses Association the financial result was most encouraging, the amount realised being muon beyond expectations, especially in view of the miserable conditions earlier in the day. Several stalls were held, a wide range of attractive articles being displayed and so large was the patronage extended that an effective clearance resulted. In addition a number of competitions were held, the winners being :—Correct weight of lamb, Mr P. Renton; bed jacket, Mr Tennent; half-sovereign, hidden number, Mrs Neville; stool, Mr R. Tennent. A tennis tournament was to have been held, but it was postponed on account of . the weather, and will be he'd at an early date,

The fete extended into the evening when it took the form of a public dance, being held in the hall in the grounds. Here again public support was again forthcoming, there being another large attendance, and an enjoyable evening was spent to music by the Happiness Boys, a delectable suoper being served.

The fete was a. pronounced success and the Matron, Miss Anderson, expressed her sincere thanks to all who assisted the function so liberally.
