SHANGHAI, February 21
A ghastly industrial tragedy occurred this morning when a Chinese rubber shoe factory in the Yangsepoo district was gutted by fire, following on a boiler explosion. The death roll i s estimated at over one hundred. The victims were trapped in the burning building, wlncn was a two storied one. The main boiler exploded, blasting the walls and causing a huge blaze, severing communication with the upstairs portion. Then there was a second explosion, precipitating the majority of three hundred Chinese male and female employees, mostly children, into the raging furnace below. Seventy were taken to the hospital in a terrible condition.
A police riot followed when a huge crowd of excited Chinese friends and relatives gathered, following on the news of the disaster, resulting in in-,.,.-'1 jidc scenes.
The local authorities arc making inquiries, since a lack of any factory legislation in Shanghai prevents the proper inspection of industrial estab lislnnents.
