DEATH ANNOUNCED IN N. YORK
Mr Abraham E. Lefcoiirt, who di-e*:l in New York recently from a heart attack at the age of 55 years, was known as “Father of the skyscrapers” and the “Skyline King” of New York. "Eta rose from being a newsboy and a bootblack to the position of one l of the leading property owners in the city and a millionaire. He was credited with having erected in 20 years • 30 fvreat skyscraper. buildings valued together at £50,000,000. His latest plan was to erect a monumental building of more than 100 stor-fiys to, outrival in height all others, but the project was delayed by the depression. Mir Le'fcourt was born in the East Side slums, and began his business career at the age of 12 by selling newspapers. Forty yeans later lie built a skyscraper, on. the. site on which be had earned his first few. pennies. In the meantime he was. successively a hootblack, a. draper’s clerk, a travelling sal'sman, a clothing merchant and a banker. .In 1925-he gave his 13-year-o’d son Alan a skyscraper worth £2,CC0,030, but the boy died before tiro building had -been completed, aa’d Mr Lefcourt never recovea’ed from the blow. .
