A BRITISH NOTE

RESTITUTION TO ITALY SOUGHT.

(United Press Association—By Electric

Telegraph—Copyright)

PARIS, February 18

Following o. n the alleged smuggling of some machine guns and rifie.s from Italy during January, contrary to the Versailles Treaty, Fr..me a nd. Britain have sent a note to Austria, asking for th ( > restitution of any such arms to Italy, or their destruction within a fortnight.

In som e quarters this is described as an ultimatum, but the French Foreign Office disclaims that term. Rome messages show that Daly is angry at th e despatch of the Fr„.-ico-British note. Italy considorecr it to be a violent and an unmerited humiliation of Austria.

The effect of the note lias been to arouse further Italian anger against France and France’s ally Yugoslavia.

HUNGARIAN CIRCLES SHOCKED,

considered disrespectful,

BUDAPEST, February 18

Hungarian official circles are -shocked at the peremptoriness of the Fi’anco-British-H i rtenberg note, which is regarded ns recalling th e pre-war methods, and is disrespectful to Aus. triads sovereignty. Th e note wag delivered a week ago. Therefore it leaves only one week for fulfilment.

The Hungarian Foreign Office, though, the note specifies Hungary, Fonsidens that the matter is not Hungary’s affair.

NOTE “ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.”

(Received 11.30 a.m.) BERLIN, February 19,

Political circles say that the Hirtenberg note is absolutely amazing and is almost an act of violence towards a small power, especially since the disarmament conference is endeavouring to remove discriminations attendant on existing peace treaties.
