RUST IN WHEAT
MUCH DAMAGE DONE.
PALMERSTON NORTH, Feb. 18
It is estimated that there will be a loss of 15 to 20 per cent in the best yields and total destruction in otner cases, as the result of rust in what promised to be a record wheat yield in the Manawatu and Rangitikei districts. Discussing the, outbreak of rust, Mr J. O. Neill, field mycologist at the Plant Research Station, said that, apart from the losses in yield, a further effect was to lower the quality of the sample, in previous years there'had not been jmuc.h tfpvere' loss, but now milling wheat was at a substantial premium over fowl wheat, consequently the rust infected yield was much less profitable owing, to the sample not being up to milling standard through the grain bejing shrivelled and discoloured. The present year was a particularly bad one for rust.
