Last Wednesday the Humphreys School held its annual picnic in the grounds of the local school, nearly one hundred being present. The day was perfect and was responsible for such a large assemblage of people. The huge ornamental plane trees lent shade* to those seeking shelter from the warm sun. Mr Robert Bradley the energetic secretary together with his bevy ol willing committee-men worked hard to bring everything to a. successful issue. A sports programme consisted of novelty, three legged, sack and flat races |or young and old was carried out. Good prizes in money and kind ana something for each littlo tot was given. Supplies of' ice creams fresh fruit of various kinds, soft drinks, and lolly scrambles, were .amongst the delicacies distributed, whilst Miss Jacobs discoursed delightful music on the school . piano. Altogether the picnic for 1933 was voted one of the best held in the district for many & long day.

Application has been made to the Minister of Internal Affairs and the New Zealand Trotting Conference by the Groymoutli Trotting Club for a permit to hold a special two-day meeting at Greymouth later in the season. It is understood that the Nelson Trotting Club is considering abandoning its meeting this year. It had been suggested that the Nelson Trotting Club meeting should be hold in Greymouth, but previously this course had proved unsuccessful financially to both the Nelson and Greymouth Clubs. If the Grey Club’s request is acceded to. t'he meeting will probably be held in ■June. The matter of dates, class of events and stakes will be decided upon as scon as approval is given to the application.

A meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in St. Andrew’s Hall last week, when the vice-president, (Mrs Parkhill) occupied the chair. The resignation of Mrs Wilson, as. president of the Institute was accepted with regret. Correspondence was received from the Jubilee Institute for the blind thanking members for their assistance in disposing of close on £3O worth 0 f goods a t tlie recent sale. It was decided that a combined picnic of all the neighbouring Institutes be held in the race course on February 23rd. A demonstration in tatting was given by Mrs Thompson and Mi’s -Cox. The occupants of an aeroplane which arrived at the Wnipa Racing Club’s course at. Te Awnmutu one afternoon last week experienced something more than tlie thrill of landing. When the De Sou ter monoplane came to rest, a Jersey bull took exception to the landing. The pilot and his passenger had just dismounted when they saw the bull coming toward them, obviously intent upon alt encounter. They hastily re-eiiered Hit! machine and taxied to the fair eitd of the field. The bull followed them, and the best way to avoid ail encounter that might easily have caused serious damage to men and machine appeared to be immediate flight. The aeroplane was soon soaring overhead, and the bull having put bis intruder literally to flight, returned satisfied to his pasture.
