GOLD MINING

SOUTHLAND FIND REPORTED. MAY PROVE VERY LUCRATIVE. GORE, January 25. What may prove to he a highly lucrative claim in Southland is reported to have been discovered on property adjacent to the Riverview Homestead on the Gore-Matari:'a River Road by 'three Gore unemployed tradesmen, 'who for seme months past have been go.d prospecting in the vicinity. A-ter a fairly lengthy period in which only indifferent returns we're obtained, tile party ha,s discovered a comparatively rich gold-bearing wash, from which the yield has exceeded all expectations, although practically little development work has been done. In the matter of a week or two of casual surface working something more than lOoz. of gold have been obtained. Under primitive methods the values so far are said to have worked out at from 5s “cl to £1 per yard, and it is claimed that with more modern equipment the return would have been much higher.

Much of the importance of the find will depend upon the depth and extent of the wash. The working of the claim may offer some difficulties ana one of these is in the securing of sufficient water. It is thought, however, that this problem can be solved and a possible solution of it is at present .rinder "consideration. The prospectors concerned are Messrs W. Murray, I. Grant and J. Wingham.
