BURMESE ’QUAKES

THIRTY EXPERIENCED' DAILY

GREATER UPHEAVAL FEARED.

(United Press Association—Py Electric Telugi ph—Copyrignt.)

CALCUTTA, January 23

Frequent earth tremors at Htawgaw, on the Smo-Burmese frontier, are believed to presage the re-opening of an old volcano in Upper Burma. Htawgaw is a hill of decomposed graniiilite, formerly the site of a fort, which was shaken to bits in 1929, and abandoned.

Thirty shocks daily are occurring, but as the neighbouring villages are comprised of thatched bamboo huts little notice is taken.

The origin is traced to a fault in the Lagwai Pass, 20 miles away, and is believed to be associated with, tremors in Rlmbri, Assam.

It is thought likely that a largescale earthquake threatens the locality.
