POLLING TO-DAY

50 INJURED DURING MEETING.

LONDON, January 23,

Fifty persons were injured at- Mr Cosgrave’s meeting held at Tralee, Kerry, on Sunday night, when an orgy uf stone throwing broke out, largely because a. road near the meeting place i was under repair, a nd provided a plentiful supply of ammunition, iliougA a nunioer of thos'-J hurt were injured in a series of baton charges by Civic Guards, who were called in to restore order. Tralee has long been a revolutionaiy centre. The meeting wag relatively ;l small one, but youths constantly interrupted Mr Cosgrave with cries of “Up the Republic!” Mr Cosgrave’s loud-speaking talking film in his car was smashed. Three members of the “White Army” Were knocked down and kicked. Twenty were taken to the hospital. The “Daily Mail’s” Dublin correspondent says: The worst disturb* ance in Mr Cosgrave’s day occurred at Killarney, where, following upon his meeting the crowd stoned and attempted to disarm the military guard that was provided for him. The soldiers drew their revolvers injuring fifty, Doctor Davitt, Cosgnvo Party candidate for Meath, declared . that Messrs Ryan and O’Kelly brought from Ottawa a draft settlement with Britain, which Mr de Valera refused. Why dees de Valera not produce that secret settlement?” asked Dr Davitt, adding: “Because he is afraid of gunmen.”

FORECAST OF THE RESULT. LONDON, January 23. The Irish Free State elections take place to-morrow. . The electorate numbers seventeen hundred thousand. The London' “Daily Telegraph’s” Dublin correspondent gives the following cautious forecast of the; election results:—De Valeraites, 64 ■ Cosgravitea, 60; Labourites, 6Centre Party, 13; Independents, 10. The foregoing gives a ‘ total of 70 Government supporters against an Opposition bloc of 83. The week-end meetings were generally orderly, a few street fights in Dublin being the only signs of violence. *
