The third day’s play in the PJ linker Shield cricket match, Auckland -v. Wellington, saw the home team make a fine recovery from an awkward position. The weather was fine and tne wicket was easy. The last four Wellington batsmen gave thfeir side a first innings lead of 31 runs. Auckland’s best batsmen failed at the start of the second innings. Newman struck his best bowling form. After lunch : five wickets were down for 82.
The partnerships between Whitelaw and Bush, and between Garrard and Pearson saved the home side. All four batted brilliantly. Auckland have now one wicket in hand and are 2 55 ahead. The prospects are for a keen finish to-morrow.
