GRASS FIRE
CAUSES GREAT DAMAGE
TO CROPS AND FENCES

Over £2dCO worcli .of damage was done 'by a tire wnich started yesterday morning on the railway hue between Bank,side and Rakaia. It spread out on a two .mile front and travelled swiftly over about ten miles of country, .parched by the recent dry weather. ... \.... /' The fire was fought by about seven lnmclred men, lor nearly, twelve houi.s.. It was stopped by a wide area ploughed for crgoping; Hundreds of ■holies of grass 'which may not recover before the winter, about 50 acres of plantation, many acres of wheat and miles ,of. fences ware burnt, the lire leaving a blackened -was.e over an extensive area. With the exception of a shed can one property, farm buildings escaped. •Some farmers will be faced with a difficult problem in finding feed for their stock. The lire started on the railway line, where the burning off of grass was in progress. The flames got out of control. Officers of the Railway Department are making inquiries to-day as to the ■extent ,of the damage.
