LONDON, January 17.

Furnace is in a semi-conscious state, and is sinking. His wife was present with a detective at his bedside, trying to make sense of his incoherent cries.

The .police are mystified as to how Furnace concealed the poison. He was t.snipped, and his doth.es were thoroughly searched. He was arrested for the murder of ’Walter Spatcbett at his office near Hampstead. Furnace, a master builder, at Chalk Farm, had his office in a shed. An alarm was given one night that the shod was afire, and a fireman found .a man, later identified as Furnace, among the ruins. Detectives found the dead man was Walter Spatchett, a young rent collector, said to have been a. secret ■ service agent of the “Black and Tans” during the Irish troubles in 1921. A later message advises that Furnace is dead.
