CHINESE WITH A CHOPPER. MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED. A desperate fight between ,a Chin_.se, who was armed with a chopper, and a European took place in a room in Sussex 'Stnect, 'Sydney, on a re cent night. John Cavendish, aged 31, a salesman, was later admitted to Sydney Hospital in a , serious condition. Eight gtitches were inserted in a. gash on the side of h.'e face, and several stitches were inserted in wounds on his arms and lege. The pohce learned that ,a quarrel commenced over a packet of cigarettes, and blows were exehangd: Then, it is alleged, the Chinese dashed out of the room, and returned with a meat chopper. According to the police, he attacked Cavendish, and chased him .around the small room. The room resembled a shambles, when th e 'police arrived, even though attempts had been made to clean it up. The walls .and the door were marked by blows with the choppei. Cavendish, th, e police b p liev p , grappled with his' assailant, struck him several violent blows, and then made his escape from the building. Later, two detectives arrested a Chinese, who was bath ina contused jaw. He was charged with having 'inflicted grievous buddy u«rm upon Cavendish, and w.n s then taken to Sydney Hospital for treatment.
