(Received 'this day at 1.30 p.m.) PIiKiNG, January 3. The Japanese occupied 'Shan Hal Kuan in the afternoon, -alter a brink offensive lasting only 4 hours, in which the infantry, artillery and aeroplanes co-operated with the support of two destroy e rs. The Japanese . have now demanded the withdrawal of all Ch'nese troops to -Changli on the PeiwingJMukdcn railway, about forty miles southward of Shan Hai Kuan. Part 6 of th e city wall were destroyed. Earlier, four thousand Japanese infantry made a desperate assault, but they were repulsed by fierce Chinese machine gun fire.
LEAGUE OF NATIONS WORRIED. (TZ-'ceived th : s day at 1.30 p.m.) GENEVA, January 3. League circles are greatly perturbed at the resumption of hostilities in the Far East; TV feeling ir, that they will destroy the remaining chances of tile League’s conciliation.

The ]at e st -Sino-Japanese situation is perturbing, British official circles. Japanese activities have again directed definite penetration into Chinese territory nvhich policy, coupled with her refusal to abide by -any portion of the JLytton report, probably will compel Britain and European powers' to invoke Paragraph IV, Article XV of the Covenant of Geneva.
