For the past 12 months there • have been periodic police raids . in Grey’s avenue cn premises occupied by pakapoo “banks.” while a number rf shops and houses in which opium was found have been forced by detectives, the premises in-some rases having been strongly barricaded. Most of the fines imposed have been paid, but in a number of instances the offenders have failed to find the money and have gone to prison in default. Fines imposed on Chinese convicted of offences arising from the smoking of opium, which come under < several sntutes, have totalled • £1517 10s since the beginning of last year. .
