LONDON. December 23. To ho locked in a cage in darkness for. a quarter of an hour with six polar bears was the ordeal of an animal trainer named Janesco.
i The Nottingham electricity supply •failed and plunged the theatre into darkness... The audience heard growls from the cage, where Janesco, who had been attacked the previous night by one of the. bears was putting them Through their 'act. In the dim, light Janesco saw the same bear approaching, followed by the others. He kept them at bay with his whip and circled the cage' until the lights, came on again! Two of the hears leaned* against the door, preventing his exit. “Polar bears are ferocious, and untrustworthy,” Janesco said afterward. “I felt them rubbing against me in ,tUq, darkness. One scratched my trouser leg, and I knew, that if be drew bloo’d, the bears, would rend me instantly. I could just see the green eyes and the white fur, but bears can s-ee well in tjie dark. It was the longest quarter of an hour I have.ever known.”
