INCREASED TRADE RECOVERY IN AUSTRALIA. (Australian Press Association.)

(Received thi s day at 12.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 22. The Premier (Mr B. S. B. Stevens), reviewing the economic conditions, said that, during the past six business activity had increased by ten per cent, and the wholesale trade by seven per cent. The turnover in the principal department stores was more than ten per cent. Deposits in the savings Banks had increased by £1,300,000, and it was estimated that at least 20,000 additional employees had been engaged in factories in New South Wales. Mr -Stevens added that there had also been a mjirked revival in business in real estate, and on the stock exchange, while the expansion of rail and tramway receipts was most substantial. BUILDING TRADE, FIGURES. (Received this day at 10.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 22. The Water Board’,s figures of ne w ibuilditigs erected in the city and suburbs during the current year show that the slump which was in evidence during 1931, continued during the first s’ix months of the current year, but there wag an upward tendency in recent months. Returns show that 1443 new buildings were erected at a cost of £1,866,472 this year compared with 1621 new buildings costing £1,792,145 in 1931.
