A NEW LINER
FOR NEW ZEALAND TRADE,
(United Press Association—3y Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)
LONDON, December 20.
The interesting association of Akaroa with the hoisting of the British flag in the South Island of New Zealand was mentioned by Sir Thomas Wilford in his message to the luncheon on the new liner “Akaroa,” on the eve of her sailing on her maiden trip. The Akaroa is the latest addition to the fleet of the Slio and Albion Lin. She is of 15)000 tonsj and is 550 feet long, and it is the only steamer in the trade to have a permanent swimming bath. Sir T. Wilford complimented the company on its foresight ip determining to be ready for good times, instead of waiting till they came.
Sir John Macmillan said that from the point of view of utility, there was no better ship in the New Zealand trade.
Mr Malcolm MacDonald, in a happy speech, stressed the importance of British ships in the flow of Empire trade.
