(Per Press Association — copyright.)
AUCKLAND, December 19,
Two sharks cruising leisurely a short distance from the foreshore at Stanley Bay on Saturday were unwelcome visitors to the popular bathing beach. They were first seen on the Stanley Point side of the jetty. A little later one of them, 7ft in length, made its way towards the wharf, near which there were many bathers, including several children.
Fortunately the alarm was given by a woman who noticed the shark as it moved toward the pier. The swimmers hurriedly left the water, some of them running down the wharf to watch the ugly monster a.s it swam slowly in the shade of the wharf less than 40 vards from the shore.
The heacli was thronged yesterday, although it was noticeable that most’ of the bathers remained within comfortable distance of the land.
