N.S.W. UPPER HOUSE
SETBACKS FOR GOVERNMENT.
{Australian Press Association.)
(Received this day at 10.15 a.m.' 'SYDNEY, December 17.
The Government was again defeated in the Upper House when an amendment. by Mr Con,cannon for the appointment of ia select committee to inquire into the Meat Industry Amendment Bill was carried.
Later, the Government received two further setbacks in the Landlord and Tenant Bill.
The reasons for the resignation of Mr Oleary were contained in a letter which Mr Cleary sent to the Premier. Mr Cleary pointed out that- recent threats in Parliament to reverse appointments Whenever opportunity arose was having the effect of demoralising the service, particularly in the lower branches. He was convinced that nothing short of drastic re-organ-ll-ation wouldl put the service into proper working order. Without such changes he would not attempt to carry on, but if ho attempted to carry on ie-organisation, it would be impossible to escape the suggestion of vindictiveness because of the railway history which was “too vivid and recent to he ignored.”
