TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. From tlio “Guardian, for week ended December 17, ICO7. Parliament Buildings Burned.—Fire destroyed Parliament Buildings early this morning. The library section and contents were s.ved intact, but the rest was completely destroyed. The hre originated in the native interpreters’ room and quickly spread. Although there was plenty of time to salvage much of the contents, there was nolrdv on hand until the fire had a good bold. Cricket.—The following will represent the Kanieri Club in a match against Hokitika on Saturday:—Rose, Shaw, Borton, R. and T. Wells, Owens, Free (captain), H. Morris, Proven, T. Stain's and McGuigm. Emergency, Pfahlert.
National Defence League.—An enthusiastic me’ting was held at Ross last evening. Mr T. W. Bruce presiding. An address under the auspices, of the National Defence League was given by Captain McNnught. A branch of the league was formed, and the following were elected a committee:—Dr F. Telford, the Revs. Pice, Parlane and O’Connor, Captain Martin, Messrs T. W. Bruce, Pryor, Kerr, Winchester, Houlahan, Nir.isen, Ford, Yor,worth, Linstrom Lopas, Grimmond, Whittle, Peebles, Anderson, Hcal.y, Ferguson, Markham, Crnickshs.nks, Boykin, Harris, Mansell, Pedrazzi and Evans.
Ross Warden’s Court.—Business was dealt with as follows:—Residence sit «, Robert Moffat and F. McLeod, (Mikenui) adjourned: special claims, Toseph Grimmond (Ross). W. Kokatahi.—Kokatahi war, en fete on Wednesday evening when a concert ivas held in aid of the building fund >f the Church of England. The first part of the programme was carried out by- the Dramatic Club, “Popp'e‘'on’s Predicaments” was staged, the Havers being Mis'-es MeKinn n. E. Diedrichs, M. Karnbach, J. Baird, Iv. Wallace, Mrs O’Brien and Messrs Emeron, P. Hoslan, end E. McCormack. The remainder of the programme con■V,nd of musical items’ and a farce “Kiss and be Friends.”
