An accident happened yesterday ■ afternoon to Mr William Owens, a well I known settler at Dower Kokatahi. He was engaged with another man in making a tramline, when a log slipped and fell on Mr Owens catching him across the hack. He was taken to the "Westland Hospital where it was found that one rib was fractured. • 'He was badly bruised, but he had escaped nn v other serious injury, and is progressing ns well as can be expected.

An increase of 17 of infectious and other notifiable d-sear’es reported during the week ended noon on Monday in the Canterbury and West Coast Health Districts, as compared with the previous week, is largely accounted for by thirteen cases of food poisoning amongst members of the staff cf the Karitane Hospital, Cashmere. Those affected partook in common of a certain food, and were reported on Mon-, day to be well. The report of the analysis had not been received yesterday by the Medical Officer of Health (Dr T. Fletcher Telford).
