BOAT SWAMPED
MAN DROWNED FATALITY NEAR WELLINGTON. (Per Press Association— Copyright .J WELLINGTON, Decitiber 13. As the result of the swamping of a small boat off Palmer Head, late this afternoon, Ernest Edward Jones, aged 35, a single man, was drowned. There were two men in sfaj •the time, but the other man was cued by some people who were in another boat in the vicinity. Accompanied by his brother-in-law, Joseph McCrohon, Jones at the time of the accident, was setting fishing nets. It is believed that the boat was swamped, and that Jones lost his hold of the craft. »
The plight of McCrohon, who clung to the boat, was observed! by three men in a boat an the vicinity, and they were .able to get him aboard. This accident occurred about five o’clock, but the sea at that time, and later, was too rough to allow of efforts to recover the body. BOAT ADRIFT IN COOK iSTRAIT. STEAMER EFFECTS RESCUE. ' . WELLINGTON, December After drifting helplessly with a bro-ken-down engine nearly all'day, aM’-.: when their hopes of rescue were rapidly vanishing, two men aboard a 20ft. launch were fortunate enough to be sighted and .picked up this afternoon by the tramp steamer Newton Elm, when about seven miles out to sea, off Pencarrow Head. The Newton Elm, which was .passing through Cook Strait in a voyage from Auckland to Westport, brought them, to the vicinity of the harbour entrance, where they were transferred 1 to*the Government steamer “Janie Seddon,” -and brought to port. The two men aboard the launch -were G. Hudson and C. Usher, both of Petone. They left Paremata in the launch ■ about four this morning for Petone. When off Sinclair Head, the engine stopped, due to water reaching the magneto. They drifted until 3.30 o’clock this afternoon, when they were sighted by the Newton Elm.' .. During the (operations, a plank on the lunch was stove in, and the craft was cast adrift,. The rescued men highly praise the ' seamanship of the Newton Elm’s captain, officers and crew, and express their gratiude for the great kindness received.
