PRODUCER SHOCKED
LONDON PLAYS VULGAR. MELBOURNE, December 8. Declaring that he' could not imagine what had happened to the censor, Mr Frederick Blackman, the J. C. Williamson producer, who returned from England .to-day said that a large nura her of plays recently staged in London were lewd, vulgar and impossible for presentation in any decent way.
Mr Blackman was for 2o years m the various roles of player, stage manager. general producer and manager at Daly's Theatre, London. His recent visit to England was made after a stay of five and a half years in Australia, and lie said to-day that he was amazed at the retrograde step that had been taken by tbe London stage. “Many of the plays that have latch been put on make me think that the censor was- definitely asleep. “Thc Lord Ch.imherlain has the power of banning a play. The scrip is forwarded to him, and this is passed over to somebody to read. “He is allowing subjects and forms of language to be spoken that are unworthy of tbe stage. A s long as this is permitted the stage will not come back to tbe first line of entertainment.”
