BOWLING

MENTAL GREEN OPENED. The formal opening of the season bf the Mental Hospital bowling green took place yesterday afternoon when some twenty members of the Hokitika Club by invitation attended and played a game with rinks of attendants and patients. The green which showed the result of careful treatment and rolled out in good style, the running being fast and true, and there was a fine draw.

The general condition of the green was very satisfactory and when tournament time comes round it will he at least equal to .that of the Hokitika green. The general surroundings of the green are well kept, and the patients find much pleasure in the summer pastime.

A esterday the play was of a very interesting.nature and the form shown hv the home team was of such iC quality that the visitors were, extended to hold their own. In each instance the .play was very even and . tvas > thoroughly enjoyed by the players.. There were a number ot interested visitors, patients and members of the staff, the perfect afternoon making the conditions most, enjoyable. u. • Daring the afternoon Dr. Childs and his staff entertained the players and visitors at afternoon tea, on the verandah of the patients’ residence adjoining the green and the dainty repast provided was thoroughly appreciated, : • /:'■! Before* the gathering dispersed officials of the Club extended to Dr, Childs their congratulations on the excellent condition t.of the green and its surroundings,' thanked him for his hsopitality and expressed their pleasure of having bad such an enjoyable afternoon. . , '

Dr. Childs stated that it had given great pleasure to himself and his staff, and the ,patients to have -bad thi3 lerfjoyAbla gsTne, that afternoon when the conditions were so perfect, and he hoped the visit would be repeated at an early date.

The third round for the singles championship was completed yesterday evening when the fallowing draw was made for the fourth round:— Ken* plays Sherman. Cooper plays Stevenson. Cboke plays Benjamin. Breeze plays Fleming. ■ V*, La kin. plays Conning. Wilson, a bye.
