AUCKLAND, November 30.
The Melanesian Mission Aboard was advised ta-day by Captain Stanton that he had abandoned the idea of charter-
ing a vessel at Villa, and of taking the native crew of the Southern Cross to the Solomons, and the whole complement of the wrecked vessel will return to Sydney by the ship La Perouse. The Secretary of the Board said that Captain Stanton would probably go from Sydney to the Solomons in charge of' the native crew, and the European members would return to Auckland at the first opportunity. I The statement that private advice had been received that an inquiry had been held into the less of the Southern Cross and that the captain and officers were exonerated, is not confirmed. The Mission Board on Friday asked the Customs collector at Vila, if an inquiry was to be held, and if'so, for a • copy Df thb' proceedingsANo reply' has < been received, nor has Captain Stanton mentioned anything regarding an inquiry.
