CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS

WELLINGTON, November 29.
Conciliation proceedings in the dispute between the New Zealand Federated Builders’ and Contractors’ industrial Association and the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and. Joiners commenced to-day on a Dominion basis before Conciliation Commissioner W. Newton. Mr W. T. Mount-joy appeared as the employers’ advocate, and Mr T. Blood worth for the employees. A reduction in the wages for carpenters, joiners and joiners machinists to 2s per hour was asked by the employers, while the employees asked for the old rate of 2s 3|d per hour. It was agreed that the- worker who is responsible for carrying out- the work and who gives instructions to the workers should receive not less than Is per dla-y extra. The employers asked for a. 44 hour week, and the employees for a 40 hour week. The en l ,clovers finally offered a net rate of 1® lid hut they declined to depart from tlveir original offer in regard to overtime rates and holiday pay. Some minor concessions regarding ornoral conditions were offered.
