MEAT DISPUTE
UNIONISTS CHARGED. NEW PLYMOUTH, November 27. For the first time in New Zealand men have been cnarged with following two or more persons in a disorderly manner with a view to preventing them from doing anything whicn they had a legal right to do. Six Waitara freezing works employees were convicted by Mr It. W. Tate, S.M., at New Plymouth Police . Court yesterday. Described by the Magistrate as “the main trouble maker,” a Maori, named , Fisher Kapa, was sentenced to imprisonment for one month.
The other five, Clarence Rowles, Jahn Mallard Crowe, Richard Paerau Paltridge, Richard Samuel Kendrick, and Harry Trott were each fined £o . which, on- the applicaton of Mr L. M. Moss, for the defence, was increased to £-5 Is in view of the possibility of an appeal, in default 14 days. The men were allowed a week to pay..
The defence was a denial of the truth of the evidence given by the witnesses for the prosecution. The Magistrate said he did not believe the story told by the defence. It was straining his credulity too much.
LYTTELTON WATERSIDERS
CHRISTCHURCH, November 27
With tin* decision of the Wellington watersides to load frozen meat as usual, the whole complexion of the fr.eezuig dispute has. altered. The probability, is now. that the trouble will be confined to the- one industry and will not assume the proportions of a general strike. The attitude ot the watersiders at Lyttelton has been one-of waiting-, but it is generally believed in Port that the men will continue to load- meat, although no official intimation to that effect has yet been received. In. the meantime, the position at the local works is, unchanged. Work is poceeding slowly on the limited amount of stock available, and new developments are not expected till Tuesday or Wednesday.
