UNEMPLOYMENT

GREYMOUTH PROTEST,

GREYMOUTH; November 23.

As the result of the recent discussion, by the Grey mouth Borough Council, of the reductions made by the Unemployment Board in the amount of relief money 'allocated to Greymouth, a resolution of protest was forwarded to the ‘Board, but, so far, no reply ha® been received. The Mayor (Mr J. W. Greenslade) also 'communicated, on the game subject, with th e Hon. R. Masters, M.L.C., and has received the following reply. “I am in receipt of your letter of the 14th inst., together with a copy of one addressed by your Council to the Commissioner of Unemployment, protesting against, a further reduction in th e amount received by those engaged on relief 'schemes. In reply, I have to ■advise you that I fully recognise that it i« your desire to assist the Government in every way possible, and I am i ur© that the Board will greatly appreciate this spirit of co-operation. Mr Hamilton and the Board have undoubtedly a most difficult task, and I can assure you that we are all doing our utmost to help in the direction of providing relief for those less fortunate members of the community, who, through no fault of their own, have been deprived of their occupations and 'livelihood.' You know, of course, that this matter does not come under my jurisdiction, but I have carefully noted the suggestions you have made, particularly ,ln regard to the special nature of the difficulties on the Coast, and I shall be pleased to plare your representations be for© Mr HamiL ton, who will, 'I am sure, go into them thoroughly and sympathetically."
