WORKERS LIABLE TO PENALTY
Hi’ OTHER WORK IS REFUSED
(Per Press Association — Copyright.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 22
If a relief worker registers regularly every fourteen days he will not be .penalised for accepting outside temporary work. If, however, the Labour Department finds that a man has refused an offer of outside employment without a satisfactory explanation he will have to stand down from relief work. That was the position as outlined by Mr R. T. Bailey (Offi-cer-in-C'harge of the Labour Department) following a discussion at yesterday’s meeting of the Citizen’s Unemployment Relief Committee. A letter wvs received from a relief worker alleging that he had been penalised by being put off relief work for some time following his acceptance of temporary private employment. Mr E. H. Andrews (chairman) said tfidt or course the man did not keen up his Registration. Men on relief work were encouraged to get other work on their off days.
Mr J: W. Crampton said there was no harm in making a statement showing the men that other work c-ould be token up. Many of the men were afraid to take up outside work. Mr Bailey: If men are offered private work and don’t take it they stand, more chance of having to stand down.
Mr Andrews: We should point out that we expect the men to hunt for private work in their spare time. That is, of course, as long as they keep up their registrations. The letter was referred to Mr Bailey.
