YOUNG CHILD DROWNED

ROTORUA, November 18

An eighteen months’ child, Selwyn Heywood, son of Mr and Mrs S. -R. Heywood, was drowned on Thursday afternoon at Ngakuru. The child apparently was playing beside a creek near his parents’ lliome, and ■ed to cross a plank bridge spanning the water. The mother missed the child ■and, following a s earch, it was founo lying in two feet of water near the bridge. The child had then been in the water for some time, life being extinct.

Arrested iat Wellington on a charge of having .on October 30th. broken and entered the shop of Premier Drapery Coy. -at Palmerston .Noitb, i?nd having stolen goods valued at £l3O Sterling;, Jarney, Vincent Reardon appeared before Justices. After the hearing of evidence, accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, had being refused. A detective stated a large quantity of goods remained undiscovered, and he objected to bail being granted.

MEAT LOADED AT BELFAST. CHRISTCHURCH, November 18,

Meat was lorded on railway waggons at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company's works at Belfast this morning bv the Company’s permanent hands and others. Six uniformed policemen stood by wibile the operations were carried out. The meat was railed to Lyttelton to be shipped next week. No trouble was experienced.
