BYE-ELECTION
UNITED PARTY ATTITUDE. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) MOTUEKA, November 16. A statement, having a bearing on .the, Motueka bye-election was released
for publication by Mr James McGlashem on behalf of the Motueka Committee of the United Party, to the effect that at a meeting of the committee, the following motion had been carried; “That as there is an Independent candidate in the field, we, the executive of the Motukea committee of the United Party, cannot see our way to support the Coalition candidate.” It was rumoured in Motueka to-day. that the Hon. R. McKenzie, the Independent Liberal-Labour candidate, has withdrawn from the contest for the Motueka bye-election. Mr J. Thorn, National secretary for the New Zealand Labour Party, said that he desired emphatically to refute any statements in circulation that the Labour Pqj had induced Mr McKenzie to withdraw from the. contest. “We have not approached, Mr McKenzie in any way whatever,” skid Mr Thorn, “nor have we, as is being alleged, made him any monetary Offer to withdraw*. The Labour Party doeß not believe fn corruption of this nature and we regret that such grossly untrue statements are being put round the district.” ‘ > •
