LACK OF CONFIDENCE
“The political evil from which we are suffering is the decay of confidence—the loss of confidence between countries and individuals,” declared Lord Cecil in a recent speech. “Confidence is the very life blood of all trade and commerce. Credit confidence is absolutely vital to the prosperity of the world, and the great task of the .statesmen is to restore that basis of credit which has been so much imperilled and disturbed by the events of the last ten or fifteen years. One of the great sources of this want of confidence was international suspicion, which created a general atmosphere of anxiety, doubt) and hesitation. Man’s desire to try something new is' disappearing because of international fear and suspicion, and you get the main principle of that in the excessive nationalism of . to-day. Patriotism is love of your country, hut nationalism is the very devil.”
