The many friends of Mr and Mrs James Toohey of Sale Street, will hear with regret of the death this morning at Westland Hospital of their seven year old son, Brian, after a long illness.
The dignity of the Auckland Police Court was disturbed when a young man who had been fined for a minor offence replaced his hat on his head, regardless of a constable’s warning, and walked noisily from the courtroom. “Bring that man' back and place him in the prisoners’ room,” ordered the Magistrate, Mr W. R. McKean, S.M. “Ke must learn to respect the Court.” The offender, who pleaded ignorance, was held in custody until after the rising of the Court about half an hour later.

Every time a large windjammer comes to Auckland old sailormen who everlastingly mourn the passing of the age of sail regretfully remark that probably the port will never see such a ship again, soys an exchange. There nre still a few of the big sailers left, .and Auckland is to be visited by one of them early in the New Year, The German four-masted barque Passat, with a cargo of guano, is expected to arrive late in January, although it is not definitely known where her ■ cargo is being loaded. At first it was stated that the vessel would pick up her freight at Juan de Nova, but that report proved incorrect. The Passat, which is a steel vesel, was built at Hamburg 22 years ago.

A 'bridge over the Haupiri river giving road access to Koipara settlement was opened yesterday when there was a large gathering of representative local bodies. Complimentary speeches were made by several present after which the assemblage adjourned to the bridge where the Chairman (Mr W. Fisher), in the unavoidable absence of the Member for the District, asked Mrs T. A. Johnston to cut the ribbon. The ribbon wias held by Mrs T. Ma,Hinson and Mrs J. M. P. Coate's, two settlers of the district, and was cut by Mrs Johnston, who declared the bridge open amid cheers. After tire Opening ceremony, the whole party journeyed on about six miles to the actual Haupiri Plains and all were greatly impressed with the large area of clear, flat land that omened out of the bush in front of them.
