PORTFOLIO OF FINANCE

MR FORBES ON A RUMOUR

WELLINGTON. November 14

“If the Hon. W. Downie Stewart wishes to resign the. portfolio of finance I have had no intimation of it,” said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) this evening, discussing a report that Mr Downie Stewart would not resume the portfolio on his return to-New Zealand.

Mi: Forbes said that he would he only too’ p’eased to hand back the portfolio to Mr Downie Stewart, for he himself had found it a rather heavy re-snens-'bility in addition to his other duties. He rereated that while he had not lately had word of Mr Downie Stewart’s health, he had no reason to believe that it would, prevent him from * resuming the ’portfolio.' . The. onl v portfolio under consideration at the moment is that of Emplpv. merit. It is possible that one result of the Department Conference On Unemployment, which was convened today by the Rt. Hon. ,T. G. Coates, uill bg the allocation of the unemployment funds under two main headings, namely the financing of relief schemes, which may he regarded as palliative measures and the financing of a comprehensive land settlement scheme offering a prospect of the permanent absorption of' a- large section of the un--1 emnloyed.

Suggestions have hen made.that the Hon. A. Hamilton will continue to administer that part of the Employment portfolio which, relates to the relief schemes and that Mr Coates will administer that part of the. Employments portfolio which relates, to the relief schemes and that Mr Coates will adm:nister the land settlement scheme. Fn- • ouiries' show, lmwever. that no definite decision on the point has vet been made, although it is admitted that such a. division of the pcv+fol'o bad been under consideration. Mr Coates has also been, engaged recently in considering plans relating to the reorganisation of the Public Works Department, and it is gathered that he would not be adverse to relief for some time longer from routine administrative work.
